Cembrit HD (heavy duty) board has recently been installed in the newly redeveloped East Stand at Twickenham, the home of England Rugby. Resilient, hard wearing and with an impressive fire rating, HD is an ideal multi-use board for high traffic areas in sports stadia such as Twickenham, which on match days sees 82,000 fans descend on the stadium.

The new East Stand development is a stunning, world class facility. KSS was the lead designer and architect on the project and worked with Wildfire London on the interior design concept and delivery. The expanded East Stand offers six floors of stylish event space, including eight brand new facilities delivering a bespoke hospitality experience for fans. The British Airways Rose Garden is the new elegant roof terrace on Level 5 and has been designed for a fun and immersive experience. Hugely popular due to its ‘outdoors feel’ which includes a built-in pizza oven and rotisserie, the venue sees a lots of foot traffic on match days.

Supplied by the Hayes branch of Minster, the fast-growing specialist insulation and dry lining distributor, the Cembrit HD board is installed in the Rose Garden itself, in the wings of the facility, as well as on the walls of the adjacent L5 concourse where impact resistance was important as crowds are moving in confined spaces. A lot of the wall finishes in the Rose Garden are also fixed through the Cembrit boards, including the brick slips behind the rotisserie section. Cembrit was delighted to be involved in the project and chosen by KSS, and Kenji Ikegaya, an architect at the practice, comments: “Cembrit’s robust and weather resistant HD boards provided us with flexibility and multipurpose utility in meeting the complex project requirements. Their technical advisors were also helpful and informative in pursuing the goals of the project.”

Cembrit HD (Heavy Duty) is a Class A2-s2, d0 fire rated high density building board comprising cement, cellulose and mineral fillers. It is ideal for ‘sealing’ buildings under construction as it is impact resistant and can be left exposed without additional treatment. HD is also extremely versatile and can be used as partitioning and is popular in offsite and SIPS construction as well as internal applications.

When a homeowner in Norwich was looking to transform his 1920s bungalow into a contemporary home that featured the most aesthetically pleasing building products on the market, he turned to Cembrit Westerland slates to provide a natural roof finish that complemented the new look of the property.

Previously a brick building with red Norfolk pantiles, the property looked run down, outdated and was badly insulated. Once the outside walls were insulated and rendered and new triple glazed aluminium windows were installed, Jon Barrell, the owner of the property, turned his attention to the roof.

“We became aware of Cembrit Westerland slates after researching what roofing materials are available” commented Jon Barrell. We wanted a light weight option that would look natural in its surroundings and would colour match the windows. The Cembrit Westerland slates ticked all these boxes. Not only that, but thanks to the thinness of the slate, we were able to raise the rafter line by 3″ to allow for an extra 2″ of insulation. We achieved this without having to alter the existing roofline or the need for planning permission.”

A total of 3,000 Westerland slates and 30 metres of Cembrit Slate Duopitch Ridge Ventilation were used to complete the re-roof, which was completed by Scott Sell Roofing. Jon didn’t want to introduce cement edges to the gables as a finishing detail, so opted for Cembrit PVC dry verges, which provided the perfect colour match to create a consistent finish across the roof. Following the project, Jon fed back to Cembrit that the roofing team enjoyed working with the Cembrit slates, as they found them easy to cut and fit.

“We had so many problems with the pantiles we used to have on our roof, and all of these issues have stopped now that we have had the Cembrit slates installed” adds Jon. “We no longer have moss growing and rolling down the gutters. Due to the surface of the ridges, the birds that used to sit on the ridges and leave mess no longer perch on the roof, meaning the roof always looks spotless! With the slates being installed in the correct tight-fitting manner, there is no draught between the slates or any vermin or other insects that used to be able to get in. We weighed the old pantiles against the Cembrit slates and have reduced the weight on the roof by 4 tons, which means no more creaking timbers or rattling tiles on a windy day. We feel that by opting for the Cembrit slates, we have achieved a classier looking project without the expense of a more costly product, which is not easy to do these days. We are over the moon with our new roof.”

Cembrit’s Westerland slate has a surface texture and dressed edge similar to that of natural slate but does not need grading and sorting prior to installation. Finished with a semi-matt acrylic coloured coating to the top face and edges and a tinted high-performance binder to the back face, the finish is of the highest quality. Easy to work with, as no power tools are needed to re-size the slates, Cembrit’s fibre cement slates simplify the install period and act as an economic alternative to natural roofing materials.

Westerland slates are manufactured in accordance with a quality assurance system to BS EN ISO 9001-2015 standard and to the requirements of BS EN 492: 2012 product specification for fibre cement slates and their fittings. Westerland slate has been awarded the BBA Certificate No. 03/4041. Cembrit’s fibre cement slates achieve the highest approvals from local national and international agencies in the fields of product quality and sustainability.

Cembrit Slate Duopitch continuously ventilated ridge tiles are specifically designed to provide a high level of ridgeline ventilation. Colour matched for use with Cembrit fibre cement slates, the ridge is suitable for pitched roofs ranging from 20° to 40°. The range includes start and end caps for a neat finish. Weighing 4kg, the product is lightweight, making it easy to transport and carry up to roof level. At 530mm in length, it is possible to carry two linear metres of ridge at a time.

Cembrit Slate Duopitch Ridge Ventilation is a fibre cement product that complements the smooth, flush look of the fibre cement slates. The ridges are lighter in weight than concrete alternatives, making them easier to install for a roofer working at height. The ridges do not require electric power for cutting, or any dust suppression equipment, equalling a much easier and quicker fitting process. They can be dry fixed with readily available colour matched Torx countersunk screws and installation is not dependent on getting the correct mortar mix, or having to wait for dry weather.

Cembrit is pleased to announce that it has received approval from the British Board of Agrément (BBA) for its cladding product range, providing peace of mind to specifiers who choose to use Cembrit’s non-combustible fibre cement cladding boards on their projects.

What is certified?

Cembrit Patina, Solid and Cover are all “A2-s1, d0” fire rated fibre cement rainscreen cladding panels. They have been assessed by the BBA and awarded certificate number 18/5600 for use as exterior non-load bearing, decorative external cladding on timber or metal vertical supports over timber frame, steel frame or masonry external walls for both new and existing buildings.

Cembrit Ltd’s Managing Director Thomas Heldgaard observed, “This was a long time coming. The assessment procedure demonstrated improvements to our processes which have been incorporated in the finished product. We are pleased that such a rigorous assessment process has resulted in an accreditation that has real value to the specifier.”

Why the BBA?

The British Board of Agrément is one of the UK’s leading notified bodies offering approval, certification and test services to manufacturers of products and systems supplying the construction industry. BBA approval is recognised by building control, government departments, architects, local authorities, specifiers, and industry insurers like the National House Builders Council (NHBC). Independent confirmation that the products covered by a BBA certificate are fit for purpose is a significant advantage for specifiers. The certification ensures peace-of-mind that BBA 3rd party approved products match the required specification. and comply with Building Regulations and the recommendations of other approved bodies, such as the NHBC.

What is assessed?

The BBA Certificate 18/5600 was awarded after Cembrit Patina, Cembrit Solid and Cembrit Cover all passed a series of comprehensive assessments, including laboratory tests, on-site evaluations, quality management checks and inspections of production. The process was lengthy, intense, demanding and thorough, but the result is that specifiers can be confident in selecting a rainscreen cladding that is fit for purpose. At a time when cladding products and the specification process is under such scrutiny, knowing that a Cembrit rainscreen meets the performance, durability and occupant security demands makes the job of rainscreen selection less worrisome.

BBA inspectors visit factories and construction sites to evaluate the product development process and assess the functionality of the product/system on site. This ensures that the manufacturing and storage is consistent with building regulations and guidelines

The student residences are located immediately adjacent to the new academic accommodation and incorporate a variety of additional facilities including a health centre, multi-faith chaplaincy, convenience store, bank, hotel school and launderette. The additional facilities within the development take a holistic approach to urban regeneration as well as giving the university an opportunity to consolidate its campus estate into one location. The new student residences, which are being developed in two phases, consist of a mixture of shared townhouse and cluster flat accommodation with the Moorland slates being installed on pitched roof areas including the main roof and mansard sections.

Keystone Roofing have supplied Russell Roofing with over 47,000m² Moorland slates so far and Frazer Simpson, Director of Russell Roofing is delighted with how the project is taking shape: “The development is a great looking project and looks particularly impressive with its waterfront location. The Moorland slates fit in perfectly with the surrounding and with their dressed edge and lightweight construction add a classy, but easy to install quality to the project. We’ve used them before and definitely will do again.”

Cembrit Moorland slates are designed with a dressed edge and smooth surface, they are light weight, pre holed and easy to cut with hand tools making them a cost effective product an added benefit for the University of Northampton. Moorland slates random, dressed edge creates a roof slope with a natural appearance, they are fully coated with a high quality, semi-matt acrylic pigmented finish which ensures the natural appearance is visible from street level.

Cembrit Glendyne natural slates have been specified and installed on a unique renovation project for the Historic Hampshire landmark, Netley Chapel, which saw the local community contributing financially to the restoration project. Before slating began, the public were invited to site to mark the occasion and “sponsor a slate”. For a small donation, visitors wrote a message and signed the reverse of a roof slate. More than 900 Glendyne slates were decorated, raising £6,600 for the friends of the Royal Victoria Country Park. These slates were then installed on the roof of the chapel by Elliotts Premier Roofing of Southampton.

Royal Victoria Country Park was once the site of the world’s largest military hospital, the Royal Victoria Hospital (or Netley Hospital). Now, all that remains of the original hospital structure, which fell into decline after being severely damaged by fire in 1963, is Netley Chapel. Thanks to a multi-million pound grant from Hampshire County Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Victorian-era building has recently undergone extensive renovation, and now marks the beginning of a new chapter for the chapel.

Hampshire-based construction company, Brymor Construction was appointed as the main contractor for the project alongside roofing subcontractor, Elliotts Premier Roofing. Having worked with Cembrit many times in the past, Elliotts Premier Roofing selected 610mm x 305mm blue-grey Cembrit Glendyne natural slates for the refurbishment of the roof covering: “As one of the oldest companies in Southampton, it’s been a privilege for us to have played such a pivotal role in this project and work with other local organisations to restore this iconic chapel,” says David Stubbington of Elliotts Premier Roofing. “We chose Cembrit Glendyne slates for the project due to its flexibility to accommodate the roof design of the prestigious building. The end result is impressive and Glendyne really accentuates the character of the chapel.”

The chapel re-opened to the public in summer 2018. An exhibition in the main body of the chapel tells the story of the former hospital, from its beginnings in the 1850s, through the Boer War, and both World Wars up to the present day.

The project was completed in a timely fashion, and is one of the first to utilise the new large 24″ x 12″ (imperial) format. Netley Chapel was finished to an extremely high standard. Cembrit was on hand to offer support and advice for this landmark renovation project. “I assisted Hampshire Council with writing the roofing specification for this project,” commented Phil Wilden, Technical Manager Pitched & Small Element Roofing Products at Cembrit. “Throughout the roof construction phase, our Regional Sales Manager and I made routine visits to the site to ensure the product was being installed to the requirements of the specification and that of British Standard BS5534. This highlights the level of technical support that we offer our customers.”

Glendyne is a high quality slate that combines first-class performance with all the inherent beauty of natural slate, making it the ideal ‘natural’ choice for specifiers and roofers. Available exclusively from Cembrit in the UK, Glendyne is a distinctive blue-grey colour. The Glendyne quarry is one of the most modern slate quarries in the world. The quarry operates a quality management system based on EN ISO 9001 which is externally audited. This standard is adhered to rigidly, as are all quality standard procedures required by each regional market the quarry supplies.

Glendyne is tested to BS EN European standard, BS EN 12326-1:2014 which requires many of the laboratory tests (‘type testing’) to be performed at least annually and the factory production control (FPC) performed and recorded as a matter of routine by the producer.

Water leaks are a distant memory for the owners of a bungalow in the Isle of Wight after Cembrit Plank was installed on the property to provide a new watertight cladding system.

Ryde-based roofing contractor, L J Teal Roofing Service was approached by the homeowners who were looking for a solution to fix a water ingress issue. The concrete blocks and render finish had become porous and water was penetrating through. Having heard about the recently launched Cembrit Plank, the contractor was confident that this weatherboard could provide a good cladding solution for the customer.

“We pitched the idea of installing a weatherboard cladding option to Mr and Mrs Morrison, and they agreed that it would be a good way forward” commented Liam Teal of L J Teal Roofing Service. “We supplied Cembrit Plank in Ivory via Roofstore and the project began in February 2018.”

L J Teal Roofing Service started the project by chipping off the paint and render, stabilising the wall with bonding agents and installing a two-coat render system. Due to the block work having an uneven finish, the contractor fitted 38mm x 50 mm counter battens required individual attention to create a uniform structure onto which Cembrit Plank could be installed. Ventilated starter profiles ensured the correct air flow behind the weatherboard. The original roof overhang presented a problem, as the gable roof ends did not extend out far enough to accommodate the cladding underneath. This resulted in the contractor altering the roof and installing new PVC fascia being fitted at the gable ends.

Once the breathable membrane was installed on top of the counter battens, L J Teal Roofing Service then turned their attention to the cladding. The contractor started by levelling the first board around the whole building and worked their way up the property fixing Cembrit Plank horizontally. Work continued rapidly with the help of Gecko gauges which meant after the first plank was laid level, the successive planks were quickly placed and fixed. Extremely easy to install, the project was completed by April 2018. The owners are delighted with their brand-new exterior, which has a natural aesthetic, and is watertight, non-combustible and low in maintenance.

Fibre cement Cembrit Plank is low in maintenance, rot, rust, warp, crack, sun, heat, rain resistant, is non-combustible, providing a superior alternative to timber and plastic based alternatives. The overlapping plank is designed to look like painted timber but will retain its attractive appearance long after alternatives have started to age. Furthermore, Cembrit Plank does not require toxic preservative treatments in the way timber weatherboarding does.

Offering a 15-year warranty, Cembrit Plank is available in 15 different colours. A range of white and dark grey shades match traditional building styles, while the addition of reds, pale browns and pastel green offer a more contemporary choice. In addition, the range includes a ready primed option for clients wishing to add their own choice of colour. For large enough orders, Cembrit can arrange customised colours. The range includes a comprehensive set of colour matched accessories, including the roofline trims needed for a neat finish where façade meets the roof.

Cembrit Glendyne natural slate brings the home of fossils to life, by adding distinctive style, character, and impressive performance to The Etches Collection museum roof in Kimmeridge.

The Etches Collection lies in the beautiful village of Kimmeridge, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty along the Dorset coastline. Listed as one of the twelve new museums to visit in 2016, it houses the collection of Steve Etches MBE, who collected and researched over 2,000 late Jurassic Kimmeridgian fossils over 30 years. The museum uses a blend of modern and traditional materials which gives the property a timeless appeal, whilst also complementing the natural beauty of its surroundings.

Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, charitable trusts, and the local community, the building was designed to fulfil a number of sustainable criteria. London-based architect, Kennedy O’Callaghan Architects presented the planners and Kimmeridge Trust with roofing samples to review, which resulted in Cembrit Glendyne slates being specified.

Janie Price from Kennedy O’Callaghan Architects comments “Glendyne slates, together with Haysom Purbeck Stone, have successfully blended the museum into the surrounding traditional cottages. The slates allow the design to fit the traditional vernacular whilst its detailing is contemporary.”

Glendyne is a high-quality slate that combines first-class performance with surprisingly attractive value for money. This is largely a result of the high yields achieved at the quarry. The combination of relatively easy to extract material and one of the most modern slate processing and quality control creates a product that offers high quality with a low production cost. The quarry operates a quality management system based on EN ISO 9001 which is externally audited. This standard is adhered to rigidly, as are all the quality standard procedures required by each regional market the quarry supplies. The result is Glendyne is possibly the most independently accredited natural slate. Available exclusively from Cembrit in the UK, Glendyne is a distinctive blue-grey colour.

Glendyne slates are tested to BS EN European standard, BS EN 12326-1:2014 which requires many of the laboratory tests (‘type testing’) to be performed at least annually and the factory production control (FPC) performed and recorded as a matter of routine by the producer.

Good quality and modern aesthetics are perfectly combined in the fibre cement slate roof of a selfbuild residential property, thanks to the installation of Cembrit Jutland fibre cement slates.

Situated in the suburbs of the beautiful town of Chilton in Durham, the selfbuild property has been constructed to feature a modern style and character that blends into the surrounding environment. Built on a vacant plot, the property comprises five bedrooms and features a multi pitched roof with rooflight windows and a dormer on the roof of the garage. With dark windows and a light brick face, the Jutland fibre cement roof slates needed to be able to complement both shades.

Local builders merchant, James Burrell supplied Durham-based roofing contractor, Wilkinson Roofing with approximately 3,000 600x300mm Cembrit Jutland fibre cement slates. Specified due to the attractive appearance and proven performance, the graphite colour slates were installed on the roof of the house and garage.

“The complex roof layout presented us with a challenge in terms of installation,” says Carl Wilkinson, Roofing Contractor at Wilkinson Roofing. “We specified Cembrit Jutland slates after receiving a recommendation from the builders’ merchant, and we are thrilled that we followed their advice, as the slates have provided a stunning end result.”

Jutland slates feature a smooth surface and are pre-holed, square edged and lightweight. They do not need to be graded and sorted like natural slates. These qualities combine to make them easy to handle and install and an ideal solution for a fast-track construction environment. Jutland slates are available in Graphite, Blue/Black, Russet and Autumn Brown colours.

Jutland slates are manufactured to the highest European standards using Portland cement together with a formulation of superior blended synthetic and cellulose fibres. Cembrit fibre cement slates are finished with a high quality, semi-matt acrylic coloured coating to the face and edges and a tinted, high-performance binder to the back face. The slates are manufactured in accordance with a quality assurance system to ISO 9001 and to the requirements of BS EN 492: 2004 product specification for fibre cement slates and their fittings. Jutland slates have been awarded the BBA Certificate No. 03/4041.

Cembrit A/A+- rated fibre cement slates can contribute to achieving an environmentally outstanding building. The five variations (Jutland, Zeeland, Westerland, Moorland and Diamond) allow designers to achieve the highest ratings for roof specifications and are currently the only fibre cement slate certificated.

Easy to install Cembrit Moorland Blue/Black slates have been used on phase two of St Modwen’s new build housing development in Dursley, Gloucestershire. Chosen for their attractive appearance, and following a successful phase one, the Moorlands were once again supplied by Willis Westcott and installed by Mcdonnell-Price, a local roofing contractor.

The properties at Littlecombe have been built using a blend of modern and traditional materials which gives the development a timeless appeal. The Moorland Blue/Black slates provide a contrast with the light coloured fascia materials and surrounding greenery. This clean appearance is enhanced by the first class installation work carried out by McDonnell-Price across the development, which features roofs with Velux windows and many vents and valleys, alongside several pitch variants of between 30 and 45 degrees. Brandon McDonnell, of McDonnell-Price is very satisfied with the end result:

“I’m pleased with the way the project came together – everything just seemed to click into place. We like Cembrit’s Moorland slates and with a project like this, one that involves a lot of detail, it was good to have a slate that is lightweight, as well as easy to cut and fix. I also like the way dark Blue/Black colour stands out and nicely defines the roof lines against the surroundings.”

Moorland 600×300 slates were supplied by Willis Westcott, a large roofing supplies merchant in the region, as well as ‘doubles’ for the verges. The slates are fixed with two copper nails at the top of each slate with a copper rivet supporting the bottom of each slate. Moorland slates have an appearance close to that of natural slate. Their smooth surface and authentic dressed edges lend themselves to all manner of prestigious applications. They are manufactured to the highest European standards and are lightweight, pre-holed, suitable for all types of projects, easy to handle and install, durable and an economic alternative to natural roofing materials.

Moorland slates are manufactured using Portland cement together with a non-asbestos formulation of superior blended synthetic and cellulose fibres. Moorland slates are pigmented during production and are fully compressed. They are finished with a high quality, semi-matt acrylic coloured coating to the top face and edges and a tinted, high performance binder to the back face.

Cembrit, the leading roofing and cladding specialist is proud to announce the addition of two new sizes to its Glendyne range of natural slates, 60×30 and 50×30, offering roofers larger slates and more versatility when working on lower pitched roofs.

On a roof with a lower pitch, the large size of the slates will not let water sit between the slates and prevents the water from getting through. Larger slates work well on low pitched roofs and are best suited for use in coastal areas where the environment has a greater degree of moisture content.

The larger sized Glendyne natural slates, 60×30 and 50×30, can be pitched at a minimum of 25° and 20° in moderate exposure zones and 30° and 22.5° in sever exposure zones respectively. The slates exceed the common 2:1 length width ratio, allowing for specification on greater range of roof pitches. The range offers a quality alternative to Welsh Slate and is readily available. Cembrit also has the facility to examine individual cases and offer specific advice on minimum pitch per project outside the parameters of BS 5534.

Glendyne is a high quality slate that combines first-class performance with all the inherent beauty of natural slate, making it the ideal ‘natural’ choice for specifiers and roofers.
